Trick 2 review

Here I will review the drama Trick 2 (2002) , which is the sequel of the drama Trick (2000).
From time to time, I like to watch an older drama. It is sometimes hard to find older dramas on the internet. I was able to watch all the episodes on www.gooddrama.net .

Synopsis (from DramaWiki) :

Trick 2 keeps on describing the strange relationships of Yamada Naoko, a skilled and unemployed magician, and Ueda Jiro a physics teacher who doesn't believe in supernatural powers. Each story gives us the opportunity to meet these funny characters including Police Officer Yabe and Naoko's mother.

My impressions

Story

The main characters still try to resolve the mysteries behinds people who claim to have some magical powers or talents. Every story, the main characters sneak to find out how people trick others that they have magical powers. What is special is that it is not 1 story for 1 episode, but 2-3 episodes for 1 story. This is a good thing, it allow each story to be a bit more complicated. Each stories are as good as the first series Trick (2000), however Trick (2000) had a slightly deeper connection between each story arches. I still think the story was extremely good for each story arches and one of the best mystery drama I have watched. I can understand however, that some people could be disappointed because it is not as good as Trick (2000).

Even though this is a mystery drama, it is also highly comedy. The story is not serious at all.

Acting

The acting really shines in this drama. It is really good and really funny. Every actors from Trick (2000) are still present and as funny as ever. The characters do tend to overreact, as it is often the case in Jdramas. Also, the humor is very "japanese" like, I do not know how to explain it exactly. If you do not like when actors overreact or acts very stupid, then this drama might not be for you. At times, it also requires knowledge of the Japanese language or culture to understand the jokes. Even without that, I still think it is very funny.

Music

I think the music was the same as it was in Trick (2000). The music is not outstanding, it was actually quite weird but I liked it and it fitted the drama very well.

In summary, I really enjoyed this series.  It was really my type of humour. If you enjoy "slapstick" japanese comedy I really recommend it.

Recommendations

It is very hard for me to make a recommendation if you enjoyed the Trick series, because it is so unique.
If you enjoy the fact that they try to reveal the truth behind fake magical and super powers, you might like Reinouryokusha Odagiri Kyouko no Uso or Galileo.
In Reinouryokusha, the main character is a fake psychic who tries to understand the reality behind supernatural situations.
In Galileo, the main character who is also a physics university teacher with a not so scientific sidekick, finds the truth behind weird happenings with the logic of physics.
